Associate Professor of Food Systems in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine
Shaun Kennedy is Director of The Food System Institute, a food and agriculture system risk management and research organization, and an adjunct Associate Professor of Food Systems in the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Prior, Shaun was Associate Professor of Food Systems at the University of Minnesota where he also served as the Director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence, and Associate Director for the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety.
Shaun’s work focuses on food safety, food fraud (including serving as a member of the U.S. Pharmacopeia intentional adulteration of food expert panel), food security and food system resiliency. The approach is to apply systems engineering principles from a local to a global scale to identify system behavior challenges, opportunities and solutions and has resulted in publications ranging from Science, Global Advances in Health and Medicine, Risk Analysis, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Food Protection, among others. Of particular focus is ecosystem health at the intersection of human health, wildlife and the environment. Audiences for his invited presentations and consultations include U.S. Congressional Testimony, the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Bank and food and agriculture firms and regulatory bodies across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. In the U.S., this has included the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Centers for Disease Control, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Department of Homeland Security and the Central Intelligence Agency. Development efforts include providing the initial framework for the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations EMPRES – Food Safety platform. Shaun’s awards include the Commissioner of the U.S. FDA Citation for Advancing Food Defense, the Inaugural lecture in the FDA’s Chief Scientist’s Distinguished Lecture Series and designation as one of Food Safety News’ Top Food Safety Educators.
