Structural Violence and the Medication Experience
The course will use a social justice framework for learning and communicating about structural violence and the intersection of culture, the medication experience, and community health. The focus will be on Chicano and Latino communities in the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota. Working with and learning from selected community organizations, the voices of the community will be at the forefront of re-examining a largely western biomedicine paradigm of "health," "medication use" and the "medicalization of illness". Using Critical Race Theory and Social Ecological frameworks, we will come to a more complex understanding of our own social locations and the interplay of power and privilege while exploring the root causes of health disparities and the development of solutions that address inequities in health, education, housing, employment, and access to respectful health care.
